I can explain myself. Vancouver Child Kicker: The Game is a fan game for the, bear with me, somehow popular F**kface podcast. Co-host Andrew Panton told a story on the podcast about how he was terrified by a strange child on his walk home one night in Vancouver, Canada. This story is popular among the listeners of the show, so I saw an opportunity to give something really fun to that community. The goal of this game was to emulate the terror Andrew felt on that fateful night where he nearly felt he needed to defend himself from a potential demon-child.
The gameplay loop is similar to that of an infinite runner, but instead you walk and defend yourself against demon children with your feet. The catch is that not all children are demons and if you kick too many innocent children, you lose.
This is the most polished personal project I have made to date. I am happy with every aspect of it and would change nothing about it. I set out to create an element of horror with pixel art, which I think was achieved with the use of 2D lighting. Other features include user profiles using Google Firebase which allowed for save settings and highscores in a web browser game. Also, I am particularly proud of my username censorship that will detect nearly any offensive word. I felt as if this should be standard to any game, but this is also part of the F**kface podcast where they censor the name of the show as an ironic joke.
The game can be played on a web browser for free here.
